How to attribute email and SMS revenue honestly

Honest email attribution combines what buyers say influenced them with what your store recorded, then removes wholesale orders that would distort the result.

How do you attribute revenue to email and SMS?

Use more than one source of truth. Wellness Marketing Reports attributes channel revenue with a post purchase survey plus Shopify data, and strips wholesale out of email numbers. The survey captures influence that platform tracking misses, such as a podcast that sent someone to sign up, while Shopify confirms the order really happened.

Why attribution is harder for censored wellness brands

Censored brands rarely grow through one channel. A buyer might hear the founder on a podcast, get a recommendation from a doctor, join the email list weeks later and buy from a cart reminder. Klaviyo will credit the last email. The podcast and the doctor get nothing. Without a second source, scope decisions drift toward whatever the dashboard happens to measure.

Wholesale adds a second distortion. A single clinic order can be worth more than a month of consumer purchases. If that order lands in the same window as a campaign, email looks heroic. If it does not, email looks weak. Neither picture is true.

Three attribution methods, compared

Attribution methods for email and SMS, as used by Wellness Marketing Reports
MethodWhat it capturesWhat it missesHow it is used here
Platform attribution (Klaviyo)Orders placed after an open or click within a set window.Earlier influences such as podcasts or doctor advice.A starting point, not the final answer.
Post purchase surveyWhat the buyer says brought them in.Buyers who skip the survey; memory can be imperfect.Combined with store data for every managed channel.
Shopify order dataConfirmed orders, values and order types. Why the buyer purchased.Confirms revenue and separates wholesale orders.

The attribution procedure, step by step

  1. Add a post purchase survey

Ask one plain question about how the buyer heard of you, with podcasts, doctors and email as options.

  2. Tag wholesale orders

Make wholesale orders identifiable in Shopify so they can be excluded from email results.

  3. Pull Klaviyo and Shopify for the same period

Match date ranges exactly before comparing anything.

  4. Report channels side by side

Show email flows, newsletters, podcasts, doctor recommendations and wholesale together.

Worksheet: revenue per delivered email and return on cost

This worksheet uses the same math as the fictional example in Digital Applied's 2026 email statistics article, where $2,000 of attributed revenue across 10,000 delivered emails gives $0.20 per delivered email, and $2,000 divided by a $500 campaign cost gives 4x. Enter your own figures below.

Assumptions

Revenue per delivered email equals attributed revenue divided by delivered emails. Return on cost equals attributed revenue divided by campaign cost, including labor. Neither subtracts product or fulfillment costs, so neither is profit.

Contribution matters too

Digital Applied continues its fictional example: if those orders contribute $800 after product and variable fulfillment costs, before campaign costs, the real picture is very different from the 4x headline. Check contribution before scaling spend.

Common questions

How do you attribute revenue to email and SMS?

Wellness Marketing Reports attributes channel revenue using a post purchase survey plus Shopify data, and removes wholesale from email numbers. The survey captures what the buyer says influenced them, while Shopify confirms the order. Combining both gives a more honest view than relying on any single platform’s attribution window alone.

Why remove wholesale revenue from email reporting?

Wholesale orders are large and irregular, so they can make email look far stronger or weaker than it really is. Removing them leaves direct to consumer orders that email actually influenced. In the Wellness Marketing Reports email case study, orders rose versus the prior year with wholesale removed, so the comparison reflects real shopper behavior.

How do you calculate revenue per delivered email?

Divide attributed revenue by the number of delivered emails. Digital Applied’s 2026 statistics article uses a fictional example where attributed revenue is $2,000, giving $0.20 per delivered email, and revenue divided by a $500 campaign cost equals 4x. The worksheet on the attribution page runs the same math on your figures.

Which channels do you report alongside email?

Reporting ties every managed channel back to revenue. In the sexual health device case study, the final year revenue was split across wholesale, Klaviyo newsletters, Klaviyo flows, doctor recommendations and podcasts. Seeing channels side by side helps decide where scope should grow, based on data rather than opinion.

What open rate should a wellness brand expect?

Open rates vary by list quality and are affected by privacy features that inflate opens, so treat them as a rough signal. Wellness Marketing Reports reports an average open rate 127% above an industry average of 21% across 41 campaigns, weighted by recipients, for one client. Clicks, orders and revenue are better measures of success.

How quickly can email results improve?

Flow changes can show up within weeks. In one Wellness Marketing Reports case, the abandonment recovery rate rose from 2.3% to 12.2% in two months after new abandoned cart and checkout series launched. Larger shifts, such as year over year revenue growth, are measured over a full year, like the 63.4% figure in the device case study.
